Our vision is to be recognised worldwide as a leading university for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge and enriching society through the fusion of education, research and practice.

Bournemouth University has more than 19,000 students and we are ranked as one of the top 77 young universities in the world (THE Young University Rankings 2021), but our ambition doesn’t stop there.

Our purpose is to inspire learning, advance knowledge and enrich society.  Our vision of Fusion brings together the key elements of education, research and practice, creating something which is greater than the sum of its parts. Through the impact of our research and education, and the contribution of our staff, students and graduates, we are able to make a difference to the world we live in.

Our students experience the benefits of Fusion, learning from those with experience in industry or practice, working on real world problems and applying research skills  We work closely with employers, practitioners and professional organisations across BU. This supports graduate employability as well as informing our research. 88% of Bournemouth University students are in work or further study six months after graduating at undergraduate level and 90% at postgraduate level (Graduate Outcomes Data 2018/19).

In the Research Excellence Framework 2021 94% of our research was defined as internationally recognised or higher, with 95.7% of research delivering considerable impact or above. Our research, education and practice helps people live better for longer; protects and preserves a sustainable environment; helps to prepare for and recover from crisis; challenges marginalisation, misinformation and underrepresentation; and helps creative industries and cultural heritage to thrive. BU is a catalyst for growth in the region, with regional partnerships in healthcare, business and sport.

Bournemouth University benefits from a wonderful location, situated between one of the UK’s newest national parks, the fifth best beach in Europe (according to TripAdvisor, 2021) and the second largest natural harbour in the world, with the World Heritage Jurassic Coast located nearby. Good transport links means that London is only two hours away.

Bournemouth University plays its part in this local economy, contributing over £1 million per day to the South West region. We employ around 1,800 staff and we are investing in our buildings, IT and facilities, such as the Bournemouth Gateway Building (offering state of the art resources for our Faculty of Health and Social Sciences), Poole Gateway Building (which includes the latest professional-level facilities in film, audio, and media) and Fusion Building (which hosts 27 new seminar rooms, three lecture theatres, a research space, and a 24-station PC laboratory).

We are serious about our commitment to sustainability and we are delighted to have been ranked in the top 7% of universities across the world in the THE Impact Rankings 2021 for our contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ SDGs, which aim to protect people and the planet.

Our strategic plan, BU2025, sets out our vision, values and outcomes, with the Fusion of education, research and practice at its heart.
