Food has a large impact on our physical health, mental wellbeing and the environment.

The team at Chartwells, our catering partners, work hard to improve their offer of freshly prepared, healthy, affordable, ethical and sustainable food, that is of course delicious, and have achieved the Soil Association’s Food for Life Silver Catering Award for our outlet in Fusion Building, recognising their efforts.

We are also proud to be one of only three universities to achieve 3 star Fairtrade University status, within the Fairtrade Universities & Colleges scheme, ran by Fairtrade Foundation and SOS-UK.

As a University, we commit to promoting plant-based and low-carbon meals as well as minimising food waste in order to reduce our environmental impact. We host a coffee cup tax to encourage the use of reusable coffee cups and have installed water refill points across our campuses to support our staff, students and guests avoid single-use plastic water bottles.

BSc Nutrition student, who completed a work placement with Chartwells

"This placement was a brilliant opportunity to learn so many new technical skills that I’m excited to use in my future career. The whole process was very rewarding, especially because the final range of products are available nationally to buy and enjoy!

The Chartwells team are immensely proud to have been awarded the Silver Standard Food for Life catering mark by the Soil Association on the main food outlet in the Fusion Building. Having this awards means that the majority of food on the menu will be freshly prepared, it will always be free from undesirable trans fats, sweeteners and additives, be cooked by trained chefs, and use ingredients from sustainable and ethical sources."
