Secure cycle storage can be accessed at:

• The back of Kimmeridge House
• The back of Christchurch House
• By the Student Village.

To access the secure compounds, please take your student or staff card to Poole House Reception where it will be validated for entry to the compounds. If you are visiting BU, please ask at Poole House Reception and they will give you a loan card to gain access during your visit. We also have open bike hoops across the campus however recommend all campus visitors to use the secure compounds where possible. 

Showers and changing facilities are located at the back of Christchurch House by the secure compound, and are also accessed using your validated student card.

Talbot Campus has specified and safe cycling routes around and across the campus however, as always, if you're cycling on campus please always be mindful of other road users and pedestrians to keep everyone safe.

Cycle storage facilities are available at all BU-approved halls of residence. As with any form of bike storage, please ensure you secure your bike properly and keep these areas clean and tidy. You can read our Looking after your Bike page for tips for how to keep your bike secure.

BU is working in partnership with Hope 2 Cycle to make cycling at BU more accessible to both students and staff. This fantastic initiative will enable you to give cycle commuting a try without the expense of buying a bike. Bikes can be loaned for a term or an entire academic year. The BU by Bike Scheme will not only save you a lot of money on your travel costs but it will also cut your carbon footprint and improve your fitness.

The cost of subscribing to the BU by Bike scheme is £25 per academic term, or £40 per academic year. A £30 deposit is required and will be fully refunded if your bike is returned on time and in good condition (see the terms and conditions).

By subscribing to the scheme you will receive the following benefits:

• Access to a fully refurbished bicycle and D lock for use while you are a student or member of staff at BU (including Chartwells, SUBU or Interserve)
• A regular free bike check for the period of use
• No labour costs to any repairs needed during your hire period - you will only have to pay for parts
• Support and advice from the Hope 2 Cycle team for the period of use
• Subsidised cost of a helmet and bike lights
• Subsidised flourescent jackets to support safety on the road.

Beryl Bikes are aiming to make cities in the UK greener, healthier and more fun to travel around. The distinctive green bikes are designed to be safe, fun and easy to ride so more people can get around on two wheels and work across the BCP conurbation as a 'pay as you ride' bike share scheme.

Anyone aged 16 or over can hire a Beryl Bike via the Beryl app and there are now four Beryl Bike bays on Talbot Campus:

• By Poole House
• Behind The Sir Michael Cobham Library
• In between Dorset House and Weymouth House
• Behind Christchurch House.

There are also a number of bays around the Lansdowne Campus area.

The bikes are available to hire instantly. To get started, you’ll need to download the Beryl app and follow the steps to create an account. You’ll then be able to see the map with the locations of the green Beryl Bays. Use the app to unlock the bike, enjoy your ride, and when you’re finished, park the bike back in a bay. Please note that additional charges apply for parking bikes out of their bays – visit the Beryl Bike terms and conditions for more details.

You can hire a Beryl Bike from 5p per minute, and have the option to ‘pay as you ride’ or buy a bundle of minutes upfront.

BU has partnered up with Beryl Bikes as part of our work to support sustainable travel choices and regularly offer discounts to students and staff so keep your eyes open to grab a bundle!

The New Forest Bike Project (NFBP) are a local company who recycle unwanted bikes and redistribute them across the community. BU work closely with NFBP by donating abandoned bikes from across our campuses which are then refurbished and brought back during our cycling events for students to purchase at low prices, including our annual Big Bike Fair in October.
