The Centre for Excellence in Media Practice

The Centre for Excellence in Media Practice (CEMP) is a research centre based in the Faculty of Media and Communication at Bournemouth University. It was awarded Centre of Excellence status in 2004 by the Higher Education Funding Council (now Research England) as the only HEFCE-funded Centre for excellence in media education in the UK.

CEMP delivers research projects funded by media organisations, charities, research councils, government departments and the private sector. Our research investigates digital and media literacies and media education, journalism education, civic media and creative media practice. CEMP convenes the Global Media Education Summit.

The CEMP team consists of Bournemouth University academics and doctoral students, working with an active team of Visiting Professors and Visiting Fellows.

CEMP runs a professional doctorate programme (Ed D) for media, creative arts and technology educators and practitioners. Members of the centre and our doctoral researchers publish widely in journals, books and edited collections. In addition to CEMP’s established Ed D programme, members of the centre are interested in proposals for PhD projects related to our four research themes.

Groups and themes

The Journalism Education Research Group (JERG)

Led by: Dr Karen Fowler-Watt

JERG is focused on student perspectives and innovative thinking around journalism pedagogy with a focus on voice, inclusivity and civic impact.

Researchers and doctoral students in JERG aim to make an impact in the wider academic community, putting research at the forefront of journalism education through interventions in journalism education debate: publications/media appearances/conferences and symposia; co-creation of knowledge; collaboration and building a community of practice.

The Media Industries Research Group (MIRG)

Led by: Dr Christa van Raalte

Researchers and doctoral students in MIRG focus on all aspects of media industries research and the group provides a platform for collaboration and development in relation to a range of discipline-specific and inter-disciplinary areas. It also partners in research with industries themselves, both in the UK and globally, to address emerging challenges in this rapidly evolving sector.

Sustainability in Media Practice

Digital and Media Literacies

Led by: Professor Julian McDougall

This research theme situates CEMP as a global hub for research into dynamic and agentive digital and media literacy research, using a theory of change for the conversion of literacies into capabilities with positive consequences.

Researchers and doctoral students in CEMP working together around this theme generate new knowledge in the dynamic intersection between media, digital technology, education, civic agency and practice.

Global Media Education Summit 2023

The Global Media Education Summit (MES) brings together an international network of researchers, educators, and practitioners across all aspects of media education, media and digital literacies, youth media production and media and technology in education.

DA-RE (Digital Arts – Refugee Engagement)

Digital Arts for Refugee Engagment (DA-RE) is an exploratory research project using arts-based activities in combination with digital literacy for developing the capabilities of refugee youth in Turkey and Bangladesh.

Evaluating Media Literacy with a Theory of Change

A team from the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice (CEMP) will provide a new media literacy evaluation framework, using a theory of change to measure the difference media literacy makes to people’s lives.

Promoting reflection and sharing within and across international communities

This AHRC network is focused on three emblematic contexts: two rural communities (Bario and Long Lamai) in Malaysia, a historical town (Ilha de Moçambique) in Mozambique, and five favelas (Rio de Janeiro) in Brazil.
