CfACTs logoCfACTs is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) COFUND research centre, co-led by Prof Jian Chang and Prof Jian J Zhang, of the Bournemouth University’s National Centre for Computer Animation (BU NCCA); CfACTs runs from October 2020 to September 2025.

CfACTs will recruit six funded post-doctoral researchers (CfACTs fellows) and embed them in UK creative technology companies for up to two years, to deliver multi-disciplinary research focused on industrial applications related to two BU Strategic Investment Areas:  Animation, Simulation and Visualisation; Medical Science, and Assistive Technology.  This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 900025.

Webinar giving guidance and support to Post Doctoral Researchers applying for CfACTs.

This is an excellent opportunity for those with research and/or development experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence.  This post will offer necessary training and career development opportunities for conducting multi-disciplinary research in one chosen research theme, in addition to expanding potential future career choices.

The CfACTs fellows will research and develop new applied digital creative techniques, collaboratively with industry; and apply their research cross-sectorally for various applications including but not limited to, computer animation, visual effects (VFX), computer vision, visualisation, healthcare, retail and assistive technology.

Fellows are expected to be seconded into one or more POs for the majority of their two-year programme with full academic and industry support to gain cross-sectoral experience.

To be eligible to apply an applicant must :

  • Applicants can be of any nationality and must meet the MSCA requirements in terms of mobility (see "CfACTs Guidance for Applicants" for details). 

  • Be in possession of a doctorate or have at least four years full-time equivalent research experience.

  • Not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the call deadline.

About CfACTs Fellows - Terms and Conditions

CfACTs Fellows are full-time academic employees of BU and embark on a two-year programme of world-leading digital creative technology research and training provided by CfACTs, and its industry Partner Organisations (POs).

Two cohorts of three fellows will be recruited: Cohort 1in 2021 and Cohort 2 in 2023. Each cohort will receive researcher training from BU, and industrial experience with CfACTs POs based in the UK. The CfACTs fellows will be jointly supervised by BU senior academics and industry experts from the CfACTs PO.

March 2023

Introducing our newest Research Fellow Dr. Chaoguang Wang.

Dr Wang earned a Ph.D in design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and received his post-doctoral training at the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  His research interests focus on game design, serious games as well as player experience and user studies enriched with physiological measurement.  Previously he worked as a game designer for six years at NetEase Inc. (Nasdaq: NTES), China, where he helped to develop the massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) title, Fairy Tale, from concept to delivery and live operation.

We are so pleased to welcome Dr Wang to CfACTs and we look forward to seeing how his research develops.

We have great pleasure in introducing and welcoming Research Fellow Dr. Prathap Soma to CfACTs.

Dr Soma is researching 4K/8K image/video up-scaling using deep learning for image rendering applications.

"I am excited to be a part of the CfACTs team.  I will gain lots of knowledge, and hands-on experience to strengthen my research skills.  I hope to enhance my global reputation and visibility through publications in reputed journals and high-profile conference attendance."
