Core Units

• Academic Study Skills for Engineering and Technology: You will gain the fundamental academic and research skills required for degree level study. The unit will introduce you to a broad grounding in literature searching, literature review, data collection, methodological approach, data analysis and interpretation and ethical practice. It will also support you to begin to develop a critical and analytical approach to your work and identify areas for personal development.
• Introduction to Computers: This unit will enable you to develop a basic knowledge and understanding of computer technology and its role in the modern world. It will also cover a range of practical computing skills and techniques you will need to be prepared for studying at degree level.
• Mathematics for Engineering and Technology: Mathematics develops analytical and problem-solving skills and provides the knowledge to solve engineering and coding problems. This unit will provide you with confidence in mathematics and enable you to perform calculations on a range of scientific data from engineering, creative technologies and computing disciplines.
• Introduction to Information Systems Analytics: Most computer applications are part of a greater system focused on the needs of an organisation. It is therefore important to understand an organisation’s processes, needs and objectives allowing appropriate systems to be designed and implemented. This unit covers the approaches and methods by which such factors can be investigated, modelled and understood, within the context of computing technology.
• Introduction to Programming: In this unit you will develop a basic knowledge and understanding of computing programming and demonstrate basic coding and problem solving skills through the design, build and testing of a small application.
• Foundation Year Engineering and Technology Project: You will design, carry out and report on an engineering or technological investigation, based on an agreed topic chosen by the unit leader. You will carry out a research task for further investigation. With a focus on global context and sustainability, the student will also produce a literature review.

• Computer Fundamentals: Understand the concepts and terminology of computing, networking, commpunications, security and virtualisation
• Mathematics for Computing: This unit will equip you with the mathematical knowledge for modelling and solving real-world computing problems
• Programming: Develop the skills and understanding to implement software solutions to different problems whilst gaining hands-on experience in programming and testing
• Data Management: Develop practical expertise in database querying and the application of the database design techniques
• Introduction to Reliable Computing Systems: Gain an introduction to the concepts of modelling and system analysis in a team approach

Elective unit:

• Computing and Society: Learn about mapping computer techniques, concepts and principles in line with sustainability

Core units

• Big Data Engineering and Analytics: Learn about the tools, technologies and data engineering elements used to efficiently process large amounts of data
• Software Engineering: Learn about the theory and practice of software engineering such as the software development process
• Systems Analysis and Design: Explore the nature of software development with an emphasis on 'upstream' development and discover the challenges associated with the process
• Data Structures and Algorithms: Learn about the theory an applications of fundamental data structures and algorithms, implementing them in real-world applications
• Technological Innovations in Computing: Building on previous programming knowledge, you will learn about uses of emerging technologies and how to develop cyber security solutions in a team approach

Elective unit:

• Software Business: Gain a deeper understanding of the unique aspects of software business, the various business models and innovations. Suited to those interested in setting up a software company

You’ll complete a minimum 30-week work placement which can be carried out anywhere in the world. The placement year offers a chance to gain experience and make contacts for the future.  Students who successfully complete the one year placement will be awarded a degree in sandwich mode.

• Human Computer Interaction: Gain an understanding of the role of Human Factors (HF) and integration of its elements into the development of complex socio-technical systems
• Systems Development: Gain a critical understanding of the design, development and deployment of enterprise grade applications to allow organisations to scale their IT provisioning in an agile way
• ​Individual Project: The Individual Project is an opportunity to pursue a topic of your choice. You'll identify a problem and then select and implement a solution to solving that problem

Option units 

• Deep Learning and Applications: Gain an introduction into Deep Learning approaches and their applications for Machine Learning tasks
• Digital Innovation and Transformation: Learn the skills, techniques and technologies that are necessary to develop a digital portfolio based on digital transformation in business innovation efforts
• Data Visualisation and Storytelling: Develop the skills of data/information visualisation and visual analytics so that you can design efficient and effective data visualisations
• Internet and Wide Area Networks: Investigate the networking aspects such as design principles, implementation in practice, analysis and evaluation of large-scale networked systems

Elective unit:

• Digital Futures: Drawing from technical, legal and social disciplines, learn about the role of digital technology in society and how it affects the individual

A placement should be a highly rewarding experience for you and the employing company and we do our best to ensure that everyone involved feels that they have got the most that they can from the experience.

Placements provide a great opportunity to make your first career steps and enhance your employability while you’re completing your studies. You’ll get the opportunity to:

• Put the theory learnt throughout the course into professional practice
• Enhance your study and help you decide on subject options (where appropriate)
• Learn a wide range of skills such as time management, problem solving and team work (all of these are important to succeed in any career)
• Make contacts, as it is not uncommon for our students to be offered permanent positions to return to after graduating
• Gain a real insight into how the industry operates in roles that would be almost impossible to achieve for an outsider
• Many of our students, during their placement, are given responsibilities normally associated with graduate trainees.

You will begin your placement after completion of your second year of study and you must complete a minimum of 30 weeks.

The faculty running your course will offer the support of a Placement Co-ordinator. 

They’ll help you plan your placement so make sure you get the right experience for you. That includes offering help and support if you need to move to another part of the UK – and even another country – to get the most out of your time.

Deferred entry: We are happy to consider eligible applicants for deferred entry. If you have already submitted your application, please submit your deferral request through our website. 

Direct entry: We welcome applications from students who have previously studied at degree level at other institutions and wish to transfer onto a BU course. Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) procedure enables credit awarded from one institution to contribute to a BU award, subject to an application process. Mature applicants: We recognise that mature applicants may have a wealth of experience rather than formal qualifications, so we’ll consider your application on these merits if included in your application. You’ll need to apply to BU in the usual way through UCAS and you may be invited to an interview to discuss your suitability for the course based on the experience you tell us about in your application.

You will need to be hard-working and committed to your studies, be a good team player, and able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

We select candidates for this course by looking at your application; there are usually no interviews or selection activities needed. For that reason, make sure your application really stands out from the crowd, and leave us in no doubt as to why you should be joining BU. We look at individual applications and make a tailored offer based on your potential to succeed on the course considering a range of factors, including your academic achievements, work and other experience, reference and personal statement, and in some cases, your performance at an interview or a portfolio review. This course is accredited by the BCS and you will also have the chance to complete the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification courses during your degree, making use of the facilities and resources at the BU Cisco Certified Local Networking Academy.

To be awarded Chartered IT Professional status from BCS you will need to complete a year of further learning beyond graduation and meet other criteria, details of which can be found on the BCS website.

Your tuition fee covers expenses associated with your course, including tuition materials, access to facilities, mandatory field trips and the following:

Additional costs

We are committed to offering you value for money and ensuring there are no hidden costs while you are studying with us, therefore we have listed below any additional costs you may incur that are not covered by your tuition fee:

• Laptops, tablets and mobile devices and any software used on personal devices. Access to a personal computer is strongly recommended for your study. If you are experiencing financial difficulty, visit our website for information regarding hardship funds.
• Accommodation and living costs. Our accommodation price guide can be found on our website.
• Travel costs to and from the University campus. An annual bus pass can be purchased alongside your rent if you are living in halls of residence/Unilet accommodation or may be purchased separately.
• Textbooks, general stationery and other supplies. Our award-winning library is stocked with a large range of textbooks and online resources, free of charge. The Students’ Union shops stock a wide range of stationery supplies on both campuses.
• Travel costs to and from your placement (both in the UK and overseas) if this is part of your course of study. Further information is available on funding your placement year page.
• Travel costs for optional field trips, outdoor wear and footwear for mandatory and optional field trips (if applicable).
• Clothing or equipment costs required for your placement if this is part of your course of study.
• SportBU membership. 

While all aspects of the programme, including required field trips, are included in the fee, additional, optional or extra curricula activities may be available for which a student contribution is required.

If you need to repeat one or more units during the course of your studies (with or without attendance) the pricing will be pro-rata of the full time fee.

The RTS wants the television industry to reflect the exciting, diverse, and talented voices of the Britain of today, and that starts by changing the industry from the inside out. The Royal Television Society Bursary Scheme is officially open for submissions. Applications will be accepted until the 15th of July 2022.

Bursaries are awarded to talented students from lower-income backgrounds studying an undergraduate degree in the subject of Journalism, VFX, Television Production, Humanities and Social Sciences, and STEM-related courses. The RTS runs three pioneering schemes – the TV Production and Journalism Bursary, the Digital Innovation Bursary, and the Steve Hewlett Scholarship. What is important is an evident interest in pursuing a career in television, film, or related media industries.

The Bursary provides free RTS membership; industry mentoring; access to the latest events and lectures; and numerous networking opportunities. We also support our Scholars financially, awarding £1000 per academic year of study.

Deniz Cetinkaya is a Principal Academic in Computing in the Department of Computing & Informatics at Bournemouth University. She is the Programme Leader for Software Engineering and Computing courses offered at BU. Prior to BU, she worked as an Assistant Professor in Software Engineering Department at Atılım University, Ankara, Turkey.

She graduated from Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey with honors in the top 2nd rank in 2002. She received her MSc degree in Computer Engineering from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey in 2005. She received her PhD degree in Systems Engineering from Delft University of Technology (Technische Universiteit Delft) in the Netherlands in 2013.

Deniz is serving as a program committee member or a reviewer for several internationally renowned conferences and journals. She has published many papers in fully refereed international conferences and journals.

Dr. Paul de Vrieze is a principal academic in the department. Previously he was a Senior Researcher at SAP research, Switzerland, and worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CSIRO ICT Centre, Australia. 

He is the coordinator of EU H2020 FIRST project, and his research interests include: design and implementation of complex enterprise information systems and their contexts, in particular when it involves business processes. He is especially interested in how best to support business in executing processes and how automation of processes, especially cross-organizational processes, can be integrated into the systems design process. 

Suzy’s specialisms include video screen casting as a media for assessment feedback on programming units.

Benjamin’s research focus is within Human Computer Interaction, specifically Accessibility where he focuses on developing technology to help people with hearing loss. His doctoral research focused on solutions to enhance the acquisition of speechreading (commonly called lipreading).

Dr Xin Lu is a Senior Lecturer at Bournemouth University. Prior to this, he was a lecturer at Coventry University. Dr Lu received his BSc degree in Electronic science and technology at Beijing Institute of Technology. He then moved to the UK to complete his MSc degree in Electronic, Electrical and System Engineering and PhD degree in Computer Science at Loughborough University.  

His research expertise mainly comes from three disciplines: Computer Science, Electronic Engineering and Manufacturing and his research areas are within Big Data analysis and Deep Learning for Intelligent Manufacturing, Intelligent Edge/Fog enabled IoTs for Smart Factories and Smart Homes.
